The Wild Animal workshop in detail

Stepping into a Virtual Reality headset transforms science from abstract diagrams on a whiteboard into an exhilarating, front-row seat to the natural world. In this immersive wild animal workshop, learners do far more than memorise biological classifications - they step directly inside four distinct ecosystems to witness the intense evolutionary arms race between predator and prey across the vertebrate classes.

The Scottish Highlands: a bird and a mammal

The journey begins soaring above the craggy peaks of the Scottish Highlands. Children track a Golden Eagle, a bird with hollow bones and modified “hand” wing structures, as it spots a mountain hare from miles away. Diving at nearly 200 km/h with its razor-sharp talons deployed, the bird delivers an unforgettable lesson in aerodynamics, speed and raptor adaptations, met in kind by the hare’s lightning-quick evasive pivots.

The rainforest floor: an amphibian and a reptile

From the skies, participants shrink down to thumb-size and drop beneath the canopy of a South American rainforest. Coming face-to-face with a five-centimetre Red-Eyed Tree Frog, learners explore how amphibians navigate land and water using permeable skin and suction-pad toes. The danger ramps up when a camouflaged pit viper slides into view. Watching the pit organs visualise infrared heat signatures illustrates reptilian hunting mechanisms in a visceral way, showing why the frog’s cold-blooded physiology and burst leap are its only saving grace.

The open Pacific: fish and the food web

Next, the workshop dives into the open Pacific Ocean, unravelling the foundational marine food web. Floating amid microscopic phytoplankton and zooplankton, children witness how microscopic energy engines sustain schools of mackerel. Suddenly, four-metre Bluefin Tuna tear through the water like torpedoes. By experiencing a flashing “bait ball” scatter, learners directly understand the purpose of schooling behaviours, internal heat exchange, and gill-based respiration.

The grasslands of India: herbivore and apex predator

The adventure concludes in the dense grasslands of India, tracking the mammal class through a standoff between a grazing deer and an apex predator: the tiger. Here, physical adaptations take centre stage. Learners examine the herbivore’s chisel-like incisors and wrap-around 360° vision, contrasting them with the tiger’s scissor-like carnassial teeth, razor-sharp retractable claws, and distinctive disruptive camouflage.

By blending rigorous biology curriculum - covering vertebrates, thermoregulation and dietary niches - with heart-pounding cinematic action, this workshop proves that experiential VR makes life science stick. It isn’t just about watching nature; it’s about standing inside the ecosystem.
