About this date

World Ocean Day falls on 8 June every year. For primary schools it is a ready-made hook for habitats, food chains and the plastics conversation.

Ocean Life in VR takes the class from the reef to the deep in a single session, which gives the day something pupils remember long after the display comes down.

What pupils will learn

The science they take away

A date on the calendar is the hook. These are the curriculum outcomes the day is built to deliver.

  1. 01Pupils explore an ocean habitat from the shallows to the deep and describe how animals are suited to each zone.
  2. 02Classes build marine food chains from creatures they have just seen, including what happens when one link is removed.
  3. 03Pupils connect plastic waste to a particular place and a particular animal, which makes an abstract problem concrete.
  4. 04Every class practises careful observation and description - naming what they can see and justifying what they think it is.

Key dates

When it falls, when to book

World Ocean Day is always 8 June. Summer term dates are the easiest in our calendar to secure at short notice.

Questions schools ask

Before you book

How far ahead should we book World Ocean Day?

Four to six weeks is often enough. The summer term is the quietest part of our calendar, so short-notice dates in June are usually possible.

Can we move it to another day in June?

Yes. The date itself is fixed but your booking is not, and any June date suits an oceans or habitats topic equally well.

Will it work for the whole school, including Reception?

Yes. Ocean Life in VR runs from EYFS to Year 6 and the pacing changes with the age group, so a single day can cover every class.

What if the hall is in use for sports day practice?

That is common in June. Send us the hall diary when you enquire and we will fit the sessions into the slots you have, or set up in another large indoor space.
